The Latest AS Roma News
Davide Zappacosta’s Roma career could be over having barely begun, as the on-loan defender has ruptured his ACL in his knee.
The news was confirmed by the club on Friday after a training session, just days after the right-back returned to the group following a previous injury. Only on loan from Chelsea until January, although the club had the option of extending his stay until the end of the season, Zappacosta’s long-term future is now in serious doubt. If he returns to Chelsea for his recovery - expected to take at least four months - he will leave having only played 12 minutes of Serie A action for Roma. Zappacosta is the latest in a worrying long line of Roma players to suffer ACL injuries in recent years, with Kevin Strootman, Rick Karsdorp and Alessandro Florenzi among the most high-profile names to be affected - while Primavera right-back Devid Bouah suffered a second injury of the sort last month. Fellow right-back Alessandro Florenzi is also at risk of missing Sunday’s clash with Cagliari, with a much less serious injury - a bout of the flu. Best wishes to Davide for a full recovery.

Zappacosta joined Roma on Wednesday, with the Giallorossi having the option to extend his loan until the end of the season - although there is no mention of an official option to buy. Nonetheless, former goalkeeper De Sanctis has told reporters that Zappacosta is likely to stay at Roma beyond six months. “Zappacosta is on loan for six months, with an automatic renewal until June 2020 if exceptional conditions relating to Chelsea’s transfer ban don’t arrive,” De Sanctis said at an introductory press conference for the former Torino man and fellow new arrival Mert Cetin. “These conditions are a precaution on Chelsea’s part, since they cannot sign any new players. “He’s an important player and therefore we accepted these precautions which, however, aren’t particularly significant. “The player will stay here for a year and prove his worth. After that, considerations will be made in June 2020.” Davide Zappacosta has joined Roma on loan from Chelsea, it has been announced.
The Italian right-back will spend the first half of the 2019-20 campaign with Roma, who do not have an option to buy the player at the end of the loan, but do have the chance to extend his loan until the end of the season. Chelsea have also confirmed that he has signed a contract extension at Stamford Bridge, meaning they have tied him down until 2022. Zappacosta, who was born in Sora, a town in the Frosinone province of the Lazio region around 100km from Rome, told Roma's official website: “I am pleased to join Roma, after an experience overseas that helped me progress as both a player and a person. “Being able to play for a great club like this is a huge motivation – I cannot wait to start training alongside my new teammates.” The 27-year-old has spent the past two years at Chelsea, mainly serving as a back-up for Cesar Azpilicueta. Before that, he was signed and sold by Gianluca Petrachi at Torino, while he also has 13 caps for Italy, the most recent coming in 2018. Although he only made four Premier League appearances last season, he was a regular in Chelsea's Europa League lineups, with the club going all the way to lift the trophy. Roma, of course, will compete in the same competition this year, after their sixth-placed finish in Serie A last season. Zappacosta will wear the number two shirt, which has been vacated by Rick Karsdorp following the Dutchman's return to Feyenoord, also on a loan. Benvenuto, Davide.
Roma are closing in on the signing of Davide Zappacosta on loan from Chelsea, claim various reports.
Gianluca Petrachi has been working to find a solution for the right-back position, and after reports linked the club with Napoli's Elseid Hysaj, the former Torino sporting director has opted to go for someone he has worked with before. Italian international Zappacosta - who Petrachi signed and sold in Turin - is expected to join Roma on a season-long loan from Chelsea, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, which will include no option to buy. The 27-year-old is scheduled to have a medical at Roma tomorrow, before the deal can be officially completed. As Zappacosta arrives, Davide Santon is expected to depart, with the full-back holding talks with La Liga newcomers Mallorca. The former Inter Milan and Newcastle defender's move would also be a loan, but this operation could include an option for a permanent purchase, per Sky Sport's Di Marzio.
Zappacosta's arrival has since been confirmed by Roma's press officer, Lorenzo Serafini, who reveals that the full-back's flight to Fiumicino airport in Rome will arrive at 11:30pm tonight.
