The Latest AS Roma News
Roma will face Torino in the Coppa Italia Round of 16.
The news comes after they beat Carpi in the Fourth Round tonight. Goals from Iago Falque and Andrea Belotti sealed a 2-0 win. The fixture will take place midweek at the Stadio Olimpico in the week commencing 18th December. Roma won 1-0 in the last encounter between the two sides in October, courtesy of an Aleksandar Kolarov goal.

Roma will now face Sampdoria away on 24th January 2018 after the fixture was rearranged.
The initial game was postponed due to severe weather in the Liguria region. Roma will now travel to the high-flying side just four days before they host them in the league, and three days after a trip to the San Siro to play Inter. Marco Giampaolo’s team are currently 6th in the table and have impressed this season. Roma captain Daniele De Rossi has been banned for two games following his red card against Genoa at the weekend.
Roma were 1-0 up when De Rossi slapped Genoa striker Gianluca Lapadula in the face, resulting in a penalty for the hosts. Lapadula duly converted to seal a point for Davide Ballardini’s side. De Rossi has apologised for his actions and will now miss games against Spal and Chievo. Following Italy's humiliating failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, Daniele De Rossi has retired from international football.
The Roma captain, 34, had been planning to retire at the end of the tournament, but with Sweden advancing ahead of Italy after the play offs, De Rossi has called time on his international career straight away. During his 13-year service for Italy's senior team, he was part of the legendary 2006 World Cup winning squad. He also won the UEFA Under 21 European Championship in 2004, before his senior international career. In total, he made 117 appearances for the Azzurri. Only Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro and Paolo Maldini managed more. With 21 goals he is also the highest-scoring midfielder for Italy since the Second World War. Now De Rossi will focus his energies on playing club football for Roma, where he has a two-year contract to fulfil. Hopefully he will now be able to play to the best of his abilities for his club side. Following opinion on this blog that right back is perhaps the only area that Roma need to strengthen in January, it looks as if Monchi is having the same thoughts.
There have been several reports this week regarding who he may target in that position, despite comments he had made earlier that he wouldn't be making any signings in January. With the injury to Rick Karsdorp however, he may be forced to act in the winter window, and four names have been linked to fill the right back role. Aleix Vidal The most frequent link with Roma has been Aleix Vidal. Were he to be purchased, it would be the second time Monchi had signed him, after bringing him to Sevilla in 2014. The Barcelona right back appears to be Monchi's first choice addition and enquiries have reportedly already been made. Matteo Darmian A player seemingly perpetually linked with a return to Serie A is Manchester United's Matteo Darmian. The Italy international is versatile and can play on either side of defence. He is also experienced and, if brought to the club, would add solidity to the backline. Davide Zappacosta A rumour that seems less likely is that of Davide Zappacosta. He only joined Chelsea in the summer, but has failed to work his way into the starting eleven on a regular basis. Hence, he may desire to play elsewhere, with Roma being potential suitors. However, it's probably more likely that he will want to stay at Chelsea to fight for a place. Sime Vrsaljko A player who worked with Eusebio Di Francesco at Sassuolo, Roma could look elsewhere in their Champions League group by bringing in Atletico Madrid's Vrsaljko. However, recent reports have suggested he is closer to a transfer to Napoli than to Roma. It will presumably be a quiet window, but this is one area that it seems needs adding to. Any of these four names could be a good option; only Monchi knows which one he will pursue. |
