The transfer window closes next Monday, so here is the last episode of Mercato Monday this summer - looking at two areas of need that were highlighted after Roma's draw with Genoa.
Roma are closing in on the signing of Davide Zappacosta on loan from Chelsea, claim various reports.
Gianluca Petrachi has been working to find a solution for the right-back position, and after reports linked the club with Napoli's Elseid Hysaj, the former Torino sporting director has opted to go for someone he has worked with before. Italian international Zappacosta - who Petrachi signed and sold in Turin - is expected to join Roma on a season-long loan from Chelsea, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, which will include no option to buy. The 27-year-old is scheduled to have a medical at Roma tomorrow, before the deal can be officially completed. As Zappacosta arrives, Davide Santon is expected to depart, with the full-back holding talks with La Liga newcomers Mallorca. The former Inter Milan and Newcastle defender's move would also be a loan, but this operation could include an option for a permanent purchase, per Sky Sport's Di Marzio.
Zappacosta's arrival has since been confirmed by Roma's press officer, Lorenzo Serafini, who reveals that the full-back's flight to Fiumicino airport in Rome will arrive at 11:30pm tonight.
Cengiz Under has agreed a contract extension with Roma that will keep him at the club until 2023.
The Turkish winger has earned a one-year extension to his previous deal, which is believed to incorporate a well-deserved payrise - just like teammate Nicolo Zaniolo, who penned a new contract yesterday. Under has been one of Roma’s standout players since arriving from Istanbul Basaksehir in 2017, leading to links with the likes of Bayern Munich and the Premier League. However, he has now committed his future to Roma, revealing it was always his wish. “I arrived at Roma two years ago and since then, day after day, I have felt more and more in love with this city, these colours and these fans,” Under wrote on Twitter. “It is a really happy moment for me, I thank the club for allowing me to realise my wish to continue playing for Roma.” Sporting director Gianluca Petrachi affirmed that Roma is the perfect place for Under to achieve his “great potential” over the coming years. A look at two Premier League-based targets for Roma, and whether they will be able to be signed before Thursday's English deadline.
The biggest Roma transfer stories of the week so far, all in one place - including updates on Kamil Glik, Mariano Diaz and Elseid Hysaj.
Petrachi considers Glik reunion With Roma seemingly losing out in the race for Spurs' Toby Alderweireld, a new centre-back is needed to partner Gianluca Mancini. On Monday, Daniele Rugani was suggested, but his excessive price tag may complicate things. Hence, journalist Alfredo Pedulla claims that sporting director Gianluca Petrachi is weighing up a move for Kamil Glik instead. Petrachi signed Glik in his Torino days, and he has since seen the defender become vice-captain at Monaco. Now 31, Glik is one year Alderweireld's senior, so would likely be a more economical option. Two options for Nzonzi exit One player moving the other way could be Steven Nzonzi, who is set to leave Roma after a disappointing debut year. According to Il Messaggero, the Frenchman is close to signing for Monaco. However, a few days ago, Gazzetta Dello Sport suggested that he may be used as part of a bid for AC Milan winger Suso. Cagliari await Defrel decision Gregoire Defrel is set to leave Roma this summer after spending last year out on loan, and according to Il Tempo's Filippo Biafora, the club have accepted an offer from Cagliari. However, the striker is waiting to decide on whether to join the Sardinian club, since he is believed to have several other offers. Peres sale could finally be made A player who was actually brought to Europe by Petrachi at Torino, but then failed to live up to expectations at Roma, the club have been actively trying to get rid of Bruno Peres for some time. A loan spell back in Brazil with Sao Paulo hasn't exactly gone to plan, and according to Globoesporte, he could return to Italy with Genoa if his spell in South America is terminated. Zidane hints at Mariano move As Roma continue their search for a new striker, one name that has cropped up is Mariano Diaz - familiar to fans after scoring against Roma in the Champions League last season. Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has now revealed that Mariano has no place in his plans, having not played in either of their first two games of their US pre-season tour. Corriere Dello Sport say that Roma advisor Franco Baldini could make contact with Florentino Perez over the player, since he has a good relationship with the Madrid president. Roma to raid Monchi's Sevilla Gianluca Petrachi already seems to have earned more respect from the fans than his predecessor Monchi, but the two could soon come into contact. According to Corriere Dello Sport, an alternative Roma are considering up front is Sevilla's Wissam Ben Yedder. A deal would be difficult given the strained relationship between Roma and Monchi, but the 29-year-old forward is showing no will to renew his contract, which has two years remaining. Right-back target expected to leave This week's Mercato Monday video relayed the news that Roma were considering Elseid Hysaj for the right-back role given the reinvention of Alessandro Florenzi as a left winger, and the Albanian's agent,, Mario Giuffredi, has given an update on his future. He told Radio Marte that he doesn't expect Hysaj to stay at Napoli because of the number of full-backs they currently have. With competitors for his signature Atletico Madrid recently signing Kieran Trippier from Spurs, Roma may have a clearer path to the 25-year-old. Possible Politano return to Roma With Antonio Conte starting a somewhat brutal revolution at Inter, there is no place in his tactical setup for Matteo Politano. The winger has been linked with a return to boyhood club Roma, where he came through the youth ranks without making a senior appearance. Calciomercato claim that he could be offered back to his hometown team as part of Inter's next bid for Edin Dzeko - but Gazzetta Dello Sport believe that a swap deal is of no interest to Roma.

Monday's biggest Roma rumours all collected in one video - as Gianluca Petrachi confirms the positions he wants to strengthen.
Paulo Fonseca insisted he had no fears as he was presented to the media on Monday afternoon, with the new head coach making a vow to get Roma back into the Champions League.
Fonseca's first pre-season with Roma gets underway this week, as he prepares for his first taste of coaching in Italy. At his first press conference - in which he made an introduction in Italian, promising to get to grips with the language quickly - he reiterated the level of his motivation to succeed at Roma. "It will not be my Roma, but everyone’s. I am motivated, together with the management and the players, to build an ambitious side that makes our supporters proud," he said. "We are working hard to build a strong team and we are studying our needs. We are pondering the choices in order to bring quality to the team. We made three purchases [with Pau Lopez completing his medical today], we’ll let you know when there’s more. We are carefully considering our choices, to bring quality profiles to reinforce the team. "[James Pallotta] has not set concrete goals, but I am forcing myself to immediately get us back into the Champions League. Another priority is to build a strong and ambitious team. "We always want to win, but we still have to make our supporters proud even when we don’t do so. We’ll get close to the finish line if we can achieve this. I won’t promise anything, but it’s my belief. "I have a two-year contract here with an option for an additional year, but I am convinced that we can win something. It is not a promise but a conviction." When asked for comment over the futures of Nicolo Zaniolo and Edin Dzeko, the Portuguese tactician responded thus: "I will start with Zaniolo: he has great talent and we believe in him. But what I’ll say to him is true to anyone who is part of the current squad - they must demonstrate in training that they deserve to wear this shirt. "I have huge ambition and I think we can do so many things with this team and this talent. The most important thing is the presence of players who want to sacrifice themselves for this shirt and put the interests of the team ahead of their own. "As for Dzeko, I haven’t spoken to him but Gianluca [Petrachi] has had the chance to do so. I want people to stay here who are motivated and happy and want to fight for this club. This is a fundamental condition: I want players dedicated to the cause and willing to pursue the goals of the team." Fonseca also suggested that Alessandro Florenzi and Lorenzo Pellegrini could be the captain and vice-captain for the upcoming season. "Florenzi was the captain of the team and it is a question that we will analyse. The probability that he will continue to be so is very high. "I know these two players well because I have faced them and watched many Roma matches. For me, it is important to get to know them well — not only on the pitch but from a character point of view, getting to know them as men. This isn’t true only for them. "As for their roles, we’ll have to see and analyse things calmly. To close this talk: we often talks about the needs of a team. I will demand something from both my players and the club." Fonseca finished by reaffirming his belief that his project at Roma can be successful. "I am here because I am convinced that I can elevate Roma to the next level. The league is difficult and very tactical, which is one of the reasons why I’m here in Italy. I believe that together we can build something special. "I don’t base my decisions off economic considerations but on how I’m feeling and the sensations I get. After I spoke to Petrachi, I didn’t hesitate. I had no doubts. This is why I’m here and tomorrow I’ll start working because I want to build something special. "Fear is a feeling I don’t know; I’m not afraid. The results are what matters. The manager is the results." Kostas Manolas' proposed move from Roma to Napoli is virtually complete, with Amadou Diawara set to head the other way.
Manolas is set to be sacrificed so that Roma can balance the books, which will bring an end to his five-year stay with the club. The Greek defender has made more than 200 appearances in that time, and is perhaps best remembered for scoring the goal which completed Roma's extraordinary comeback against Barcelona in the 2017-18 Champions League. Sky Sport's Fabrizio Romano revealed yesterday that the operation to send Manolas to Naples is complete, with Roma earning €34m from the transfer. Meanwhile, Diawara will join Roma for €18m plus €2m in bonuses, having been requested by new head coach Paulo Fonseca. Gianluca Petrachi has worked quickly to find Manolas' replacement, with Gianluca Di Marzio reporting that Roma's new sporting director has had lunch with the agent of Real Betis' Marc Bartra today in view of a potential move. Bartra, who has experience playing for Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund under his belt, would cost around €20m. |
