The Latest AS Roma News
Gregoire Defrel has left Roma to join Sampdoria on a season-long loan.
Samp have an option to buy the player as part of the agreement. Defrel joined Roma from Sassuolo last season, but only registered one goal in a miserable spell. The French striker failed to produce any quality, meaning it was imperative that he found a new club. Sampdoria should provide him with the opportunity to play as a centre forward again, a position he did well in at Sassuolo. Good luck, Gregoire.

Roma will begin the 2018-19 Serie A season with an away game against Torino, after the league fixtures were drawn today.
Last season, Roma did the league double over Torino, winning 1-0 away and 3-0 at home. However, the Turin side knocked the Giallorossi out of the Coppa Italia in December. The derbies against Lazio will take place on matchday 7 and matchday 26 of the season, while Roma will take on champions Juventus on matchdays 17 and 36. Eusebio Di Francesco's side clash with Inter on matchdays 14 and 33, when Radja Nainggolan and Luciano Spalletti will face off against their former employers. The season will end with a home game against Parma, who are returning to Serie A after their third straight promotion. It's a repeat of the final fixture of the 2000-01 season, which Roma famously won 3-1 to claim their third Scudetto. The 28-year-old joins from Danish side FC Copenhagen for €8.5m, with a further €3.5m available in bonuses. He takes the number one shirt vacated by Alisson Becker. Olsen was Sweden’s first-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup, keeping three clean sheets as his country reached the quarter finals. He told asroma.com: "It’s a big honour to come to AS Roma. It’s the next step for me and I cannot wait to get started.” Olsen becomes the final piece of the club’s new look goalkeeping setup, with Antonio Mirante and Daniel Fuzato also joining this summer. Benvenuto, Robin. Roma striker Gregoire Defrel is nearing a move to Sampdoria, according to reports.
Sky Sport have confirmed that an agreement has been made between the two clubs for a loan with an option-to-buy, with RomaPress backing up these claims in a report after speaking to Defrel's agent. It is believed that Roma would recoup the €20m they paid for him if Sampdoria were to exercise their option to sign him permanently. The forward followed Eusebio Di Francesco from Sassuolo to Roma at the start of the season, but struggled to find form, as he was often forced out to the right wing. The Frenchman only managed one goal all season, coming from the penalty spot against Benevento. He was initially included in Roma's squad list for the pre-season trip to the United States, but was removed as exit negotiations intensified. Sweden international goalkeeper Robin Olsen has landed in Rome ahead of a proposed move from Copenhagen.
Olsen was Sweden’s first-choice goalkeeper in the recent World Cup, and has spent the last two-and-a-half years with the Danish club. He is set to be confirmed as Alisson’s replacement, after the Brazilian completed a record-breaking move to Liverpool last week. Meanwhile, Roma’s pursuit of Bordeaux’s Malcom has hit a stumbling block at the last minute. After the club confirmed a deal had been agreed to sign him, it has been reported that his flight to Rome has been cancelled. Barcelona are said to have entered the race to sign him, so the deal to join Roma could be off. Roma have confirmed they have agreed a deal to sign winger Malcom from Bordeaux.
The 21-year-old Brazilian has been linked with a range of top European clubs after scoring 20 goals and making 12 assists in two-and-a-half years in France. Roma announced the deal had been agreed with Bordeaux via their website, with the move subject to a medical and personal terms. Malcom plays mainly as a right-winger, and has been capped 15 times by Brazil at youth level. He is set to arrive in Rome tonight to finalise the deal. Roma have confirmed the squad list for the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.
Following the initial training camp at Trigoria, which included a 9-0 win over Latina and a 1-1 draw with Avellino, the club will now fly out to America to participate in the International Champions Cup. 27 players will make the trip across the Atlantic, including nine of the club’s ten summer signings. Nicolò Zaniolo is the only one who isn’t involved, as he is currently on international duty with Italy at the U19 Euros. Several players have been culled from the list that took part in the Trigoria training camp. Elio Capradossi recently left for Spezia on a season-long loan, and Andrea Romagnoli has joined Serie C side Renate on a temporary basis. Meanwhile, Daniele Verde will not be making the trip to the US, a likely indication of an exit. Youngsters Stefano Greco and Alessio Riccardi will also not travel, despite coming on as late subs in the win over Latina. The same goes for Devid Bouah, who made a cameo against Avellino. Roma take on Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona and Real Madrid in the tournament. The full squad list is as follows: Goalkeepers: Antonio Mirante, Daniel Fuzato, Matteo Cardinali Defenders: Rick Karsdorp, Alessandro Florenzi, Kostas Manolas, Federico Fazio, Ivan Marcano, Juan Jesus, William Bianda, Aleksandar Kolarov, Luca Pellegrini, Davide Santon Midfielders: Daniele De Rossi, Maxine Gonalons, Kevin Strootman, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Javier Pastore, Ante Ćorić, Bryan Cristante Forwards: Edin Dzeko, Patrik Schick, Gregoire Defrel, Cengiz Ünder, Justin Kluivert, Stephan El Shaarawy, Diego Perotti Roma president James Pallotta has been banned for three months by UEFA following his comments after the club's Champions League semi-final second leg with Liverpool last season.
Roma won the game 4-2, but were still eliminated on aggregate. However, some suspect refereeing decisions went against Roma, which Pallotta was quick to point out thereafter. Eusebio Di Francesco's side were denied two clear penalties when Trent Alexander-Arnold handled the ball in the box, and Edin Dzeko was incorrectly ruled offside before being brought down in the area by Loris Karius. Had the two penalties been given - and converted - Roma would have been in the final. Pallotta described the refereeing in the game as "embarrassing" and "absolute j0ke", and also highlighted the need for VAR to be introduced to the competition. When the American found out he was under investigation for those words, he said he was "dying of laughter." His comments did not sit well with UEFA, and he has consequently been banned from attending any UEFA games for the next three months. Roma have also been fined €19,000 for setting off fireworks during the game, as well as "insufficient organisation" and blocked stairways. A statement on UEFA's website said the governing body had decided to "suspend the AS Roma official James Pallotta for three (3) months from carrying out his function during UEFA competition matches in which he would otherwise participate, starting from AS Roma’s first UEFA competition match of the 2018/2019 season. In particular, the official may not be in the technical area or communicate directly or indirectly with the team's players and/or technical staff during the match and may not enter the dressing room or tunnel before or during the match." The ban only applies for Champions League games. Roma have confirmed that midfielder Gerson has joined Serie A rivals Fiorentina on loan.
The Brazilian will spend one season in Florence, with neither club stating whether or not an option-to-buy was included in the deal. Gerson has only managed to make 15 starts across two seasons in Rome, after being signed from Fluminense in his native Brazil. The 21-year-old has scored two goals for the club - both of which came against his new club, Fiorentina, last season. The move should allow Gerson to find more regular gametime, although he joins a squad where he will still have to fight for his place. Good luck, Gerson. Alisson Becker has officially left Roma to join Premier League side Liverpool.
The 25-year-old moves for a world record fee for a goalkeeper, with the initial fee being €62.5m. Roma could earn a further €10m through add-ons. Alisson joined Roma from Internacional in 2016, but spent the majority of his first season on the bench as understudy to Wojciech Szczesny. Last season, Alisson was given the number one shirt, and featured in all but two of the team’s games in all competitions. In total, he kept 22 clean sheets in 2017-18, making a number of memorable saves. The offer that came in for the Brazilian was one that Roma couldn’t refuse, and so Alisson bade farewell to the Eternal City after two years. He follows in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah, who made the same move from Roma to Liverpool last summer, and excelled as he won the Premier League golden boot. Sweden international goalkeeper Robin Olsen is expected to be Alisson’s replacement, with Leciester’s Kasper Schmeichel and PSG’s Alphonse Areola also suggested. Grazie, Alisson. |
