The Latest AS Roma News
Roma have confirmed a contract renewal for midfield starlet Nicolo Zaniolo.
The 20-year-old was eager to renew with the club after a breakout season, despite his form tailing off towards the end of the campaign. Juventus were reportedly monitoring the situation, but Zaniolo has now pledged his future to Roma. An official announcement from the club confirmed that the Italy international had penned an extension, meaning his contract now runs until 2024, rather than 2023. Reports suggest he has doubled his salary, and will now earn somewhere between €1.5m and €2.5m per season. “A year ago it was an easy decision to choose Roma, and today it is even easier – after a season that helped me fall in love with this team and this city,” he told the club's website. “I would like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to tie myself even closer to these colours – it is exactly what I wanted.” Zaniolo contributed six goals from 36 appearances in his maiden Serie A season, and was one of the key players as Roma defeated Real Madrid in their penultimate pre-season friendly on Sunday.

Monday's biggest Roma rumours all collected in one video - as Gianluca Petrachi confirms the positions he wants to strengthen.
Paulo Fonseca insisted he had no fears as he was presented to the media on Monday afternoon, with the new head coach making a vow to get Roma back into the Champions League.
Fonseca's first pre-season with Roma gets underway this week, as he prepares for his first taste of coaching in Italy. At his first press conference - in which he made an introduction in Italian, promising to get to grips with the language quickly - he reiterated the level of his motivation to succeed at Roma. "It will not be my Roma, but everyone’s. I am motivated, together with the management and the players, to build an ambitious side that makes our supporters proud," he said. "We are working hard to build a strong team and we are studying our needs. We are pondering the choices in order to bring quality to the team. We made three purchases [with Pau Lopez completing his medical today], we’ll let you know when there’s more. We are carefully considering our choices, to bring quality profiles to reinforce the team. "[James Pallotta] has not set concrete goals, but I am forcing myself to immediately get us back into the Champions League. Another priority is to build a strong and ambitious team. "We always want to win, but we still have to make our supporters proud even when we don’t do so. We’ll get close to the finish line if we can achieve this. I won’t promise anything, but it’s my belief. "I have a two-year contract here with an option for an additional year, but I am convinced that we can win something. It is not a promise but a conviction." When asked for comment over the futures of Nicolo Zaniolo and Edin Dzeko, the Portuguese tactician responded thus: "I will start with Zaniolo: he has great talent and we believe in him. But what I’ll say to him is true to anyone who is part of the current squad - they must demonstrate in training that they deserve to wear this shirt. "I have huge ambition and I think we can do so many things with this team and this talent. The most important thing is the presence of players who want to sacrifice themselves for this shirt and put the interests of the team ahead of their own. "As for Dzeko, I haven’t spoken to him but Gianluca [Petrachi] has had the chance to do so. I want people to stay here who are motivated and happy and want to fight for this club. This is a fundamental condition: I want players dedicated to the cause and willing to pursue the goals of the team." Fonseca also suggested that Alessandro Florenzi and Lorenzo Pellegrini could be the captain and vice-captain for the upcoming season. "Florenzi was the captain of the team and it is a question that we will analyse. The probability that he will continue to be so is very high. "I know these two players well because I have faced them and watched many Roma matches. For me, it is important to get to know them well — not only on the pitch but from a character point of view, getting to know them as men. This isn’t true only for them. "As for their roles, we’ll have to see and analyse things calmly. To close this talk: we often talks about the needs of a team. I will demand something from both my players and the club." Fonseca finished by reaffirming his belief that his project at Roma can be successful. "I am here because I am convinced that I can elevate Roma to the next level. The league is difficult and very tactical, which is one of the reasons why I’m here in Italy. I believe that together we can build something special. "I don’t base my decisions off economic considerations but on how I’m feeling and the sensations I get. After I spoke to Petrachi, I didn’t hesitate. I had no doubts. This is why I’m here and tomorrow I’ll start working because I want to build something special. "Fear is a feeling I don’t know; I’m not afraid. The results are what matters. The manager is the results." All the latest Roma transfer news as pre-season begins and Gianluca Petrachi arrives, including updates on Nicolo Zaniolo, Elseid Hysaj and Javier Pastore.

What they said after De Rossi's farewell: tributes from Dzeko, Nainggolan, Riccardi and more27/5/2019
Yesterday, for the 616th and final time, Daniele De Rossi played for his beloved hometown club - Roma.
Roma won 2-1 against Parma, but the result barely mattered. The night was all about the celebration of De Rossi's career and legacy, which has seen him represent the club with fierce pride and passion over the course of 18 years. There were plenty of tears among the sold out Stadio Olimpico crowd and his teammates, as De Rossi received a beautiful reception from his people. Here is a collection of tributes to De Rossi from after the game. Edin Dzeko on Instagram "Four years spent together, so many shared moments that always united us more, you were clear and strong in the difficult situations. "With your consistency you managed to make the group and squad overcome every difficulty for your beloved shirt and for your city. One moment comes to mind: 10th April last year. I get the penalty, you score it. The proof that with team unity no result is precluded, even the semi-final of the Champions League. "Thank you for everything."
Claudio Ranieri on Il Messaggero "Daniele told me, 'I am happy that I finish together with you this evening'." Radja Nainggolan on Instagram "Today I had a very important match to play. But I had to have a space for you. I wanted to be with you for your last match with Roma. We felt each other today and I can only tell you that with your answer I felt comfortable. I will always have a true friend. I have always held you in high esteem as a player but even more as a man. I send you a big hug."
Alberto Aquilani on Instagram "With this evening, an era closes. I am proud to have been a part of it, even if our paths split too soon. Together we have been through a lot, starting with this photo, when we hoped and dreamed together about the debut in the first team. Good luck for everything, Dani. And yet the wind still blows."
James Pallotta on Twitter "I'd also like to thank the supporters in the stadium for giving Daniele the farewell he so richly deserved last night. After representing the supporters on the pitch for 18 years, the outpouring of love and support from everyone for him was incredible." Roberto Mancini to Il Romanista "De Rossi is like Totti and Bruno Conti. Roma always has many players who manage to play their entire career with that shirt, and when the time comes to leave, it is a bit difficult for both the fans and the player. De Rossi has donated all his career to Roma and that is a very important thing." Erik Lamela to Sky Sport (via ForzaRoma.info) "It is strange to think of Roma without De Rossi. Daniele played for so many years with the same team, representing them like Totti did before. I am a bit sad because I know how much he loves Roma, but I am sure that he will be happy in life. He is a great man. "My first memory of him is when I arrived; he was a point of reference, together with Totti, two great men." Nicolo Zaniolo to Sky Sport (via Calciomercato) "I don't need to describe Daniele as a person and as a player. Today I felt so many emotions and chills for a person so beloved in this great city. I just hope to do half of what he did." Alessio Riccardi on Corriere Dello Sport "Thank you captain! It is all that I can say to you after welcoming me into the locker room. Thanks for always making me feel like part of the team even if I was the youngest. I thank you for every bit of advice given in training, I will take it with me forever. Living so intensely was something incredible. I still can't believe that it all ended yesterday, I wish that game had never ended. You are everything Roma." All of Friday's Roma transfer rumours summarised in one place, including updates on Rafael Benitez, Nicolo Zaniolo and another goalkeeper suggestion.
Benitez rejects Roma approach Rafael Benitez was named recently as one of Roma's main options to take over as head coach next season. However, Chronicle Live report that, despite Roma making an approach for the former Liverpool and Napoli tactician, Benitez has informed them that he is in the process of renewing his deal at Newcastle. Palomino a target if Gasperini joins With Gian Piero Gasperini another prime candidate for the role, rumours suggested he could look to bring some players with him from Atalanta. One of those, claim Siamo La Roma, is Jose Luis Palomino, an Argentine centre-back. However, other clubs are interested, and he has been in talks over an extension to his contract, which expires next summer. Bonifazi for the backline Alternatively for the defence, SPAL's Kevin Bonifazi could be targeted. Tuttomercatoweb report that the 22-year-old, on loan from Torino with an option to buy, could move to a bigger club in the summer, with Roma and Atalanta keeping tabs. Zaniolo sets out contract demands Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo is set to enter negotiations for an improved contract after a breakout season. Gazzetta Dello Sport's Nicolo Schira observes that the teenager wants to see his salary increased to €3m, including bonuses. Pellegrini ready to commit to Roma Despite the €30m release clause in his contract, Lorenzo Pellegrini looks set to commit to Roma and become one of their leaders in the post-Daniele De Rossi era. Il Tempo confirm that he wants to become a bandiera for Roma. Greek goalkeeper targeted Roma are in need of a new goalkeeper, and the latest name to be suggested is Benfica's Odisseas Vlachodimos. Gazzetta Dello Sport say that Roma have their eyes on the Greek number one, who is valued at around €20m - which may be too much for the Giallorossi. Cangiano to be offered as compensation for Petrachi With Torino sporting director Gianluca Petrachi resigning from his post and being heavily linked with Roma - although he says he has not met with the Giallorossi yet - Tuttomercatoweb say that the Granata may ask for Roma youth player Gianmarco Cangiano as compensation. This could help sweeten the relationship between the two clubs in the case of any future negotiations for players. Roma dreaming of Belotti For example, Corriere Dello Sport say that Roma are dreaming of taking Torino captain Andrea Belotti as their replacement for Edin Dzeko. Fernando Llorente has been offered to them, but Belotti would represent a more long-term solution. Banfield winger to freshen up attack If Petrachi is confirmed at Roma, one player he may bid for is young Banfield winger Agustin Urzi, claims journalist Alfredo Pedulla. Fiorentina are also interested. Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo has revealed that he would like to stay at the club, despite interest from several European teams.
The 19-year-old has enjoyed a breakout season at Roma, even if his recent form has not been great, and his form has seen the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus hovering. However, Roma are keen to tie him down to an improved deal, and Zaniolo is eager to sign it. "I still have another four years left of my contract, I see myself here in the future," he told Corriere Dello Sport. "Naturally receiving interest from other clubs is pleasing, but I am ready to sign the renewal because I am happy here. I would be happy to stay. "I'm completely focused on these last two games, I don't think of anything else. We have to try to win both, then we'll do our calculations. "The biggest regret? That goal conceded in Genoa that prevented us from winning those three important points." Zaniolo also reserved praise for his captain Daniele De Rossi, who will leave his boyhood club next month after not being offered a contract renewal. "Losing a captain like that and a player like that in the locker room will certainly be heavy. I can only thank him for having welcomed me at Roma like a son, for having treated me like a son both on and off the field. "I won't hide from you that some tears fell after the press conference. Today, Daniele has shown how important he is for this city and this club, he is an absurd player. "I remember he sent me a message even before I arrived at Trigoria, saying, 'Welcome to our family, I am the old man of the house, you are the newcomer and you are one of us.' "Daniele is a leader both on and off the field, as well as a great player and a great person. He is a captain, Roma will lose so much." |
