The Latest AS Roma News
Defender Davide Santon has revealed that he feels like he has settled at Roma, whilst also discussing the impact of head coach Claudio Ranieri.
The full-back joined Roma from Inter in the summer, along with Nicolo Zaniolo, in the deal that saw Radja Nainggolan go the other way. And although Santon hasn't always been a starter, the Italian has revealed that he is pleased with his time at the club so far. The former Newcastle United man told Chronicle Live: "I’m enjoying playing for my new team AS Roma, the fans are very passionate and always create a great atmosphere. "My family have settled very well here and we are happy." Santon also gave insight into how Ranieri's training sessions have pushed the squad so far. "You face a new challenge in every training session and in every game. "You never stop learning. It’s a few weeks I have known Ranieri and things are going well. "He has great experience - winning the title with Leicester for one. "So I’m looking forward to following his lead and hopefully finishing with a Champions League position this year. Santon has made nine starts in Serie A this season, but with regular full-backs Aleksandar Kolarov and Alessandro Florenzi currently nursing injuries, there should be plenty of opportunities for him to add to that tally.

Former Roma head coach Rudi Garcia has claimed the club were wrong to remove Eusebio Di Francesco from his post.
Di Francesco was sacked as Roma coach on Thursday, partway through a difficult season which has seen the Giallorossi knocked out of the Champions League and Coppa Italia, with the bid for a top four place in jeapordy. Garcia - who in 2016 was the last manager to be sacked mid-season by Roma before Di Francesco - has hit out at the club's decision to part company with the former Sassuolo boss. He said: "Some have a short memory and it’s shameful to send Di Francesco away. “If you manage to take your team to the Champions League semi-finals, it means you are a good coach. Unfortunately, at Roma more than at any other club, there is a lack of patience and a pretty short memory. “Eusebio would certainly have done great things with Roma if he had been given more time." Claudio Ranieri has been appointed as Roma head coach until the end of the season.
Ranieri returns for his second spell in charge, after previously coaching the side between 2009 and 2011. The Rome-born 67-year-old replaces Eusebio Di Francesco, who was sacked on Thursday afternoon following a string of poor results. Ranieri will be tasked with leading Roma to qualification for next season's Champions League. Since leaving Roma in 2011, Ranieri has had mixed fortunes as a coach. He famously led Leicester City to the Premier League title in 2015-16, and led Monaco to promotion out of Ligue 2 in 2012-13, but was recently sacked by Fulham after just 106 days in charge. A former Roma player and Roma fan, Ranieri brings with him a wealth of knowledge of and passion for the club. He told the club's website: "I'm delighted to be coming back home. When Roma call you, it's impossible to say no." His first test in his second spell as Roma coach will be the match with Empoli on Monday night. Bentornato, Claudio. Sporting director Monchi has left his role with Roma following a mutual decision with the club.
The former Sevilla sporting director leaves Roma less than two years into his reign. The news comes just one day after Eusebio Di Francesco was removed from his position as head coach. Monchi arrived in the summer of 2017 with high expectations following his famous work at Sevilla, but he failed to live up to his standards, with many of his sales frustrating fans, and his signings disappointing. He is expected to take up a role with Arsenal at the end of the season. Frederic Massara will, for the time being, step into the sporting director role at Roma. Eusebio Di Francesco has been sacked as Roma head coach following the Giallorossi’s 4-3 aggregate loss to Porto in the Champions League Round of 16.
Roma were outfought by their Portuguese opponents, and a naive moment from Alessandro Florenzi gave them the penalty they needed in extra time to put the tie - and Di Francesco’s job - to bed. Di Francesco leaves after one-and-a-half years in charge of the club he formerly represented as a player, departing with a record of 46 wins, 18 draws and 23 defeats from 87 matches in charge. After making a name for himself at Sassuolo, Di Francesco was chosen as Luciano Spalletti’s replacement in summer 2017, with his arrival in the hotseat met with a mixed reception from fans. Throughout his first season with the club, he showed tactical inflexibility, failing to divert from a 4-3-3 system which failed to get the best out of many of the side’s better players. However, the season did have a silver lining, with Di Francesco inspiring Roma to a remarkable run to the semi-finals of the Champions League. Along the way, the highlight was the 3-0 win over Barcelona in the second leg of the quarter-final, in which Di Francesco switched to a 3-4-3. However, performances in his second season in charge failed to improve, with Roma falling as far down the table as 10th by Christmas. Pressure continued to mount on Di Francesco following a 3-3 draw with Atalanta, which saw the Lupi surrender a three-goal lead, and a harrowing 7-1 loss to Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia. Roma were in fact unbeaten in five games after that Viola thumping, but a 3-0 defeat in the Derby against Lazio put EDF in jeopardy again. Elimination from the Champions League has proven to be the final nail in the coffin for the 49-year-old. Di Francesco had been contracted with Roma until the end of next season, but now a new face will take charge. Claudio Ranieri is the early frontrunner. Grazie and good luck in the future, Eusebio. Former Roma manager Fabio Capello has urged the club not to sack present head coach Eusebio Di Francesco, despite the mounting pressure on the 49-year-old.
Di Francesco is under intense scrutiny after losing the Derby Della Capitale at the weekend and seeing Roma fall out of the Champions League at the hands of Porto. However, Capello - the last man to lead Roma to the Serie A title - has suggested that Di Francesco should be given until the end of the season at least. He told Sky Sport Italia: "Di Francesco deserves to finish the season. "No-one works miracles and there's not much time between now and the end of the season. "I hope Roma don't appoint a new coach because Di Francesco was my player and I hope he'll stay on for the rest of the season and gets the wins he deserves because he's a sincere and prepared person. "Like De Rossi said, in the next two games, which seem easy on paper, the team must show they're playing for him. They need six points." |
