The Latest AS Roma News
Get up to speed with the latest news on Edin Dzeko, Steven Nzonzi and Rafael Benitez, as all of Friday's rumours involving Roma are gathered in one place.
PSG serious about Dzeko Previous reports have indicated that PSG are willing to offer Edinson Cavani as part of a swap deal with Roma for Edin Dzeko. The Bosnian striker is dissatisfied at not having won any trophies during his time at Roma, and, by his standards, has had a poor season. Now, France Football back up those rumours by claiming that the French giants have already spoken with Dzeko's entourage - although he would move as an alternative to Cavani, not a replacement. Dzeko has just one year left on his contract. Nzonzi to follow Dzeko According to Euro United, Roma's French midfielder Steven Nzonzi could also make the move to PSG given his positive relationship with the Paris club's sporting director Antero Henrique. The Ligue 1 champions would face competition from Arsenal, Marseille and Monaco. Zaniolo renewal postponed Talks over a contract renewal for Nicolo Zaniolo will be held back until after the end of the season, report Sky Sport. The midfielder has suffered a dip in form, and has been linked with Juventus. Torino block Petrachi exit Roma's leading candidate to take over as sporting director, Gianluca Petrachi, will not be allowed to leave Torino until 2020. The club's president, Urbano Cairo, has confirmed he is confident Petrachi will not be leaving him until the end of his contract. Premier League duo in for Primavera forward Manchester City and Brighton are interested in Roma Primavera forward Gianmarco Cangiano, according to Tuttomercatoweb. Cangiano is yet to make his senior debut for the club, but has been called up to matchday squads having excelled in the Primavera this year. Roma want to rebuff the interest from the English duo and improve Cangiano's contract. Benitez could make Serie A return Following Claudio Ranieri's confirmation that he will not stay on as Roma's head coach beyond the expiration of his contract, Calciomercato indicate that Rafael Benitez is now a candidate to take over. Benitez's future at Newcastle is far from certain, and with experience managing Inter and Napoli under his belt, he could be one of the preferable options for the Giallorossi bench. The agent of Roma starlet Nicolo Zaniolo has revealed that the chances of him signing a contract extension are very high.
Zaniolo has been one of Roma's better players this season, despite his previous lack of Serie A experience. The attacking midfielder has contributed six goals and two assists in all competitions, becoming a trusted member of the first team. Inevitably, his form has seen him linked with a move away, with the likes of Juventus, Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid all interested. To warn away potential suitors, Roma have been planning an improved contract for the 19-year-old, but recent comments suggested things might not be as straight forward as planned. Zaniolo's agent, Claudio Vigorelli, recently claimed that nobody from Roma had contacted them over the renewal since Monchi left, responding to comments from Francesco Totti that negotiations are done in twos. This was a cause of concern, putting the likelihood of Zaniolo staying in doubt. However, Vigorelli has now provided some more reassuring comments. "I can only confirm our will to sign with Roma. I believe, however, that it is clear and understandable to all how there is the need to restructure Nicolo's contract," he said to Il Romanista. "I don't think I'm a visionary, saying that compared to 12 months ago the boy's situation has profoundly changed. It's enough to say that for several months I have been receiving a flood of telephone calls from many important clubs, I won't tell you who from, who offer their availability to sign him. Nicolo, however, is concentrating only on Roma, to achieve fourth place that is worth the Champions League. "In the recent past, I had spoken first with Monchi and then with [Ricky] Massara about the future of Zaniolo, we had promised to talk it over after Easter, at most at the end of the season, all we have to do is wait for the call from the club." The father of breakout Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo has confirmed that the midfielder will reject the advances of Juventus to remain with the Giallorossi.
Zaniolo, who arrived from Inter in the summer, has emerged as one of Italian football's brightest prospects this season, and has caught the attention of a number of top European clubs. The 19-year-old was a Juventus fan growing up, and the Bianconeri have been linked with him, but his father Igor has refuted speculation in an interview with Corriere Dello Sport - while also responding to reports that controversial super-agent Mino Raiola wants Zaniolo to become his client. "Raiola asked for information and is interested in Zaniolo, but [Claudio] Vigorelli will remain Nicolo’s agent for a long time," he explained. “At the end of the season there will be a meeting with Roma for his renewal, and there won’t be any problems. “On both sides there’s a willingness to conclude negotiations in a positive way. The recent talk has been bad for Roma and Nicolo. “We all have to row on the same boat if he is to develop properly. We mustn’t upset the fans and club: Roma are going for third place, there’s the derby and then the match against Porto: for him the priority is the team and he only wants to think about the pitch." The developments come after Zaniolo was recently caught on camera saying that his goal is to stay with Roma for the rest of his career. Aside from his playing ability, the Fiorentina youth product has also stood out for his humility, and given his father's other comments, it's clear to see where it comes from. “Yesterday he spent the day at home with his mother. He wants to stay focused on Roma’s upcoming games in Serie A and Champions League," Igor continued. “The first leg against Porto was a good test, but of course it’s not enough. We won’t hide his quality as it’s undeniable, but obviously we mustn’t stop now because he hasn’t done anything yet. “[His talent] will have to be confirmed in the final part of the season and then the next few years. If he stops at his two goals against Porto then we’re at the beginning of the end. "The derby? I’m pumped for it. The derby is always a special game and there’s a fantastic atmosphere for it in the city. Nicolo is fired up, but I hope he’s more relaxed than I am.” Italy manager Roberto Mancini has chosen five Roma players to be involved in a tw0-day training camp next week in preparation for the country's Euro 2020 qualifiers.
Mancini's squad - which comprises a total of 32 members - only features players based in Serie A. Among those selected are Alessandro Florenzi, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Bryan Cristante, Nicolo Zaniolo and Stephan El Shaarawy. The training camp will take place between Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th February at Coverciano, as Italy prepare for matches against Finland and Liechtenstein next month. Although this squad won't compete in any matches during their time together, it gives an indication of who is in Mancini's thoughts ahead of next month's qualifiers. El Shaarawy is returning to an Italy squad for the first time since November 2017. The winger has a total of 23 caps for Italy since his 2012 debut, scoring three international goals. He was a member of their squad for Euro 2016, and will be aiming to play a role in its follow-up. Zaniolo has been one of the success stories of the season, not just for Roma, but in Serie A as a whole. Firmly in Mancini's thoughts since his first international call-up in September 2018, Zaniolo is still awaiting his senior debut. Pellegrini is becoming more and more influential for Roma, and is beginning to replicate that form for the Azzurri too. He will be hoping to make his first major international tournament next summer. His fellow midfielder Cristante has been steadily improving over the season, and will be looking to add to his six senior caps so far. Finally, Florenzi maintains his place in the national setup despite inconsistent club form. With 31 caps, he is the most experienced of the five players called up for the squad.
Roma are ready to offer an improved contract to attacking midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, according to reports.
Zaniolo was virtually unknown in the summer when he arrived as part of the deal that took Radja Nainggolan to Inter, but he has since impressed fans with his performances, scoring his first Serie A goal and earning a call-up to the senior Italy national team. According to Calciomercato, Monchi is ready to reward Zaniolo with a new contract, that will see him tied down to the club until 2024. The 19-year-0ld is believed to be in the process of changing agents, and one of the first things to be negotiated will be the new contract. The report indicates that Zaniolo's wages will be doubled as part of the agreement. However, the contract will include a new release clause of €50m, with several top European clubs taking note of his development. The news comes as Monchi highlighted the player's progress as part of an extensive interview in today's edition of La Gazzetta Dello Sport. Asked about renewals for K0stas Manolas, Stephan El Shaarawy, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Cengiz Under, the sporting director said: "They are all different situations. Some will be evaluated at the end of the market, others at the end of the season. And there is Zaniolo that, given the performance, maybe he will be the first renewal that we will face. "I didn't expect it [for Zaniolo to do so well at this stage]. The credit for this growth is from the coach, who has been good and believed in him. Inter didn't want to include him in the deal for Nainggolan. [Inter director Piero] Ausilio had built a wall, but they wanted Radja and in the end they sold. I thought that Nicolo would be one of the prospects, but more for the long-term. In the beginning we wanted to send him on loan in Serie A given the many midfielders in the squad, but once Strootman was sold we understood that it was the perfect moment to keep him. Zaniolo is amazing everyone and I know that at this footballing level at the moment Italy needs heroes to rebuild faith, but with Nicolo we must be calmer, for his own good. He is just 19."
Monchi then made a vow that Zaniolo will stay at Roma for years to come.
"We have sold important players in order to balance the books because a model club must respect the rules. Then we all know that in Italy and abroad, there are clubs that pretend or take different paths. But today, our idea is to build a great team, so I say that Zaniolo is the future of Roma and will not be sold. He will have a long and important path in this club. He is like a building that we are building slowly, but if we do not do so well enough, then he could collapse at any second. I have seen so many talents that have been wasted." Zaniolo has made a total of 15 appearances for Roma so far. Roma have confirmed the arrivals of Davide Santon and Nicolo Zaniolo from Inter.
The pair have signed long-term contracts with the club, with Santon committing his future to Roma until 2022, and Zaniolo signing until 2023. Santon is a right-footed full-back who primarily plays on the left-hand side, and will provide much-needed cover for Aleksandar Kolarov. He has spent seven seasons at Inter across two spells, and has gained eight caps at international level for Italy. He signs for a fee of €9.5m. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Zaniolo joins for €4.5m, with Inter retaining a sell-on clause. The young attacking midfielder will wear the number 22 shirt for Roma. Benvenuto, Davide e Nicolo. |
