The Latest AS Roma News
Roma have agreed terms with Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca and will unveil him as their new coach next week, according to reports.
Fonseca emerged as Roma's main target following snubs from Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri and Gian Piero Gasperini. According to Sky Sport's Gianluca Di Marzio, talks with Shakhtar over acquiring the Portuguese tactician have been positive. It will cost €2m to release Fonseca from his contract at Shakhtar, a fee which the Ukrainians have reduced due to their gratitude to him and in recognition of his ambition to coach in a major European league. Corriere Dello Sport confirm that Fonseca will agree to a three-year contract with a €2.5m-per-year salary. He has won the Ukrainian league and cup double in each of his three seasons at Shakhtar, boasting a 75% win rate. Roma came up against Fonseca's Shakhtar in the 2017-18 season's Champions League Round of 16, where the Giallorossi advanced on away goals. Three Shakhtar players could follow Fonseca to Italy, with left-back Ismaily, midfielder Marcos Antonio and forward Taison all linked. Roma are hoping to be able to officially confirm Fonseca's appointment next week, perhaps even as early as Monday.
