The Latest AS Roma News
Following Italy's humiliating failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, Daniele De Rossi has retired from international football.
The Roma captain, 34, had been planning to retire at the end of the tournament, but with Sweden advancing ahead of Italy after the play offs, De Rossi has called time on his international career straight away. During his 13-year service for Italy's senior team, he was part of the legendary 2006 World Cup winning squad. He also won the UEFA Under 21 European Championship in 2004, before his senior international career. In total, he made 117 appearances for the Azzurri. Only Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro and Paolo Maldini managed more. With 21 goals he is also the highest-scoring midfielder for Italy since the Second World War. Now De Rossi will focus his energies on playing club football for Roma, where he has a two-year contract to fulfil. Hopefully he will now be able to play to the best of his abilities for his club side.
