Monday's biggest Roma rumours all collected in one video - as Gianluca Petrachi confirms the positions he wants to strengthen.
Paulo Fonseca insisted he had no fears as he was presented to the media on Monday afternoon, with the new head coach making a vow to get Roma back into the Champions League.
Fonseca's first pre-season with Roma gets underway this week, as he prepares for his first taste of coaching in Italy. At his first press conference - in which he made an introduction in Italian, promising to get to grips with the language quickly - he reiterated the level of his motivation to succeed at Roma. "It will not be my Roma, but everyone’s. I am motivated, together with the management and the players, to build an ambitious side that makes our supporters proud," he said. "We are working hard to build a strong team and we are studying our needs. We are pondering the choices in order to bring quality to the team. We made three purchases [with Pau Lopez completing his medical today], we’ll let you know when there’s more. We are carefully considering our choices, to bring quality profiles to reinforce the team. "[James Pallotta] has not set concrete goals, but I am forcing myself to immediately get us back into the Champions League. Another priority is to build a strong and ambitious team. "We always want to win, but we still have to make our supporters proud even when we don’t do so. We’ll get close to the finish line if we can achieve this. I won’t promise anything, but it’s my belief. "I have a two-year contract here with an option for an additional year, but I am convinced that we can win something. It is not a promise but a conviction." When asked for comment over the futures of Nicolo Zaniolo and Edin Dzeko, the Portuguese tactician responded thus: "I will start with Zaniolo: he has great talent and we believe in him. But what I’ll say to him is true to anyone who is part of the current squad - they must demonstrate in training that they deserve to wear this shirt. "I have huge ambition and I think we can do so many things with this team and this talent. The most important thing is the presence of players who want to sacrifice themselves for this shirt and put the interests of the team ahead of their own. "As for Dzeko, I haven’t spoken to him but Gianluca [Petrachi] has had the chance to do so. I want people to stay here who are motivated and happy and want to fight for this club. This is a fundamental condition: I want players dedicated to the cause and willing to pursue the goals of the team." Fonseca also suggested that Alessandro Florenzi and Lorenzo Pellegrini could be the captain and vice-captain for the upcoming season. "Florenzi was the captain of the team and it is a question that we will analyse. The probability that he will continue to be so is very high. "I know these two players well because I have faced them and watched many Roma matches. For me, it is important to get to know them well — not only on the pitch but from a character point of view, getting to know them as men. This isn’t true only for them. "As for their roles, we’ll have to see and analyse things calmly. To close this talk: we often talks about the needs of a team. I will demand something from both my players and the club." Fonseca finished by reaffirming his belief that his project at Roma can be successful. "I am here because I am convinced that I can elevate Roma to the next level. The league is difficult and very tactical, which is one of the reasons why I’m here in Italy. I believe that together we can build something special. "I don’t base my decisions off economic considerations but on how I’m feeling and the sensations I get. After I spoke to Petrachi, I didn’t hesitate. I had no doubts. This is why I’m here and tomorrow I’ll start working because I want to build something special. "Fear is a feeling I don’t know; I’m not afraid. The results are what matters. The manager is the results." A look at how Roma players performed on international duty last week.

Inter are thought to already have an agreement with him. Fonseca urges rethink However, in a fresh twist, Tele Radio Stereo say that Fonseca wants to try and convince Dzeko to stay at Roma until the expiration of his contract next year. Whether or not Roma are in a position to do this financially can be scrutinised. The final Roma Rumour Roundup of the week brings updates on Nicolo Zaniolo, Radja Nainggolan and Roma's search for a new goalkeeper.
Juve striker proposed in Zaniolo swap deal According to Calciomercato.it, Juventus are serious in their interest in Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, and will offer striker Gonzalo Higuain in return. Higuain spent the second half of last season on loan at Chelsea, but he has struggled to rediscover the form which saw him claim the Capocannoniere with Napoli in 2015-16. Tuttosport, however, acknowledge that Roma do not want to sell Zaniolo, who is valued at €50m. Nainggolan wants Roma return Last summer saw Zaniolo arrive from Inter as Radja Nainggolan went the other way, but according to Corriere Della Sera, the Belgian is already unsettled in Milan and wants to return to Roma. Inter have put him on the transfer list, but the asking price is €29m. It remains to be seen whether Roma would entertain such a move for the 31-year-old. Roma ask for Inter striker One transfer that is more likely to happen between the two clubs is one that would take Edin Dzeko to Inter. According to the same paper, Roma would like young Inter striker Andrea Pinamonti, who spent last season on loan at Frosinone, as part of the deal. Icardi offer falls short The more ambitious name to come the other way would be Mauro Icardi, but La Repubblica say Roma have fallen short in their offer of €30m plus Dzeko. Inter want at least €25m more, with a move to Juventus much more likely for Icardi. Fonseca eyes Portuguese starlet With Paulo Fonseca set to be appointed as Roma's new coach next week, the focus has turned to who he might want his new club to sign. According to Sky Sport's Gianluca Di Marzio, one potential target is his Portuguese compatriot Florentino Luis, a 19-year-old midfielder currently at Benfica. Ex-director to help Roma sign keeper Ricky Massara may have left Roma, but his work with the club may not be over. According to Corriere Giallorosso's Checco Casano, Massara is set to take over as Fiorentina's sporting director, which could help Roma in their pursuit of Bartolomiej Dragowski. The young Viola goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Empoli, where he impressed. Roma looking to usurp Torino defender bid Roma are one of several clubs are interested in Livorno defender Luka Bogdan, according to Tuttomercatoweb. However, Torino have already started negotiations for the Croatian, while Sassuolo and Napoli are also tracking him. Roma have been linked with a stunning swoop for Inter Milan's star striker Mauro Icardi.
Icardi has been arguably the best centre-foward in Serie A over the past five years, racking up more than 100 goals at a rate better than a goal every two games. However, his relations with Inter became frosty when they stripped him of the captaincy in February, without prior warning. The Argentine had been linked with Manchester United as part of a swap deal with Romelu Lukaku, but the Premier League club are reportedly not interested. Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Napoli are also said to be interested. However, according to Sky Sport's Gianluca Di Marzio, Roma are now weighing up a move for the player. Edin Dzeko is closing in on a move in the opposite direction, so the Giallorossi could take advantage by bringing Icardi to the capital as a replacement. Recent reports have suggested that Inter's asking price for Icardi is €75m, so with Dzeko costing just shy of €15m, Roma would need to break their club transfer record to land Inter's number nine. Whether they have the means to do this remains to be seen, but some youth players could be involved in the deal - just like how Inter gave Roma Nicolo Zaniolo last summer as part of their bid to sign Radja Nainggolan. On the player's part, Icardi wants to stay at San Siro, but new head coach Antonio Conte may not have a place for him in his plans. And, with Financial Fair Play deadlines looming, the 26-year-old could be headed for an exit. Have a view about Roma that you want to share? Any negotiations over Pellegrini will come separately. Dragowski a goalkeeping alternative If the Cragno asking price is deemed to be too high, then Roma will set their sights on Bartlomiej Dragowski from Fiorentina, who impressed on loan at Empoli last season. Il Romanista observe that the player is keen on the move, but Brighton and Southampton are also interested. Shakhtar waive Fonseca fee Roma are closer to making a decision on their next manager, with it apparently being a two-horse race between Paulo Fonseca and Roberto De Zerbi. The Ukrainian giants will not begrudge him the opportunity to work in a bigger league after three successive league titles. He is currently in charge of the Italy U21 side. Ten Hag approach turned down One man who will not be taking over as coach is Erik Ten Hag, with Dutch paper De Telegraaf claiming that Ajax have rejected Roma's approach to speak to him due to Monchi's failed negotiations for Hakim Ziyech last summer. The report claims that last season's Champions League semi-finalists feel Ziyech was mistreated by Monchi when a deal was not agreed between the clubs. Defrel decision depends on coach Pagine Romaniste assess the futures of the players Roma sent out on loan last year, and claim that Gregoire Defrel, who enjoyed a productive spell at Sampdoria, will not be sold until the new coach arrives. However, another striker who has had a fruitful season away from Trigoria, Ezequiel Ponce, is likely to be sold. Pair of clubs want Verde Il Romanista report that Real Valladolid will not be signing Daniele Verde permanently after his loan. With just one year left on his Roma contract, it may be finally time to sell him, with AEK Athens and Genk making enquiries.
