The Latest AS Roma News
Daniele De Rossi has confirmed that he will leave Roma at the end of the season.
Roma’s captain will bring an end to his 19-year association with the first team, in which he has become the club’s second leading appearance maker of all-time, behind only his former teammate and friend Francesco Totti. De Rossi, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, inherited the captaincy from Totti in 2017, and has continued to be the beating heart of the Giallorossi midfield. However, soon to turn 36, he has decided that the time is right to finish his Roma career - although he will keep playing elsewhere. His place in Roma history is guaranteed. Grazie, Daniele.

Daniele De Rossi has confirmed that he would like to become a coach in the future, while he is confident that Roma will maintain a strong identity after his retirement.
De Rossi has represented Roma for his entire professional career, making 600 appearances, but is in the final year of his contract. However, in an interview with Roma TV, he confirmed that he wants to keep playing until he becomes a hindrance to the team. "I will not become a burden or take something away from the team," he said. "I already have clear ideas about the coming years, though I have never expressed them so that I have the freedom to change my mind. I'm a bit selfish in this way. "I have a passion for football and becoming a coach is the only role I see for myself in the future. First I'll need to see if I am ready to subject my family to the stress and pressure of this role though." Coaching runs in the De Rossi family, with Daniele's father Alberto a distinguished trainer at youth level, having overseen Roma's Primavera side for more than 10 years. Given Daniele's leadership, it has always seemed likely that he would also become a good coach. He has shown no signs of giving up his playing career just yet, but is aware that he doesn't have long left at the top. Nonetheless, he was keen to reassure supporters that there will be a smooth transition when he does move on. "Roma always goes on," he continued. "It did so after Di Bartolomei, Conti, Giannini. It even did so without Totti, which is perhaps the most painful thing for fans to have imagined." Those same fans will only hope that De Rossi is given more of a say than Totti was when the time comes to hang up his boots. However, having started the season strongly, De Rossi has put himself in a strong position to remind everyone of his everlasting influence on the team. Daniele De Rossi has become Roma’s all-time leading appearance maker in the Champions League.
The captain made his 58th appearance in the competition against Real Madrid on Wednesday night, which saw him overtake Francesco Totti. De Rossi played a key role in Roma’s run to the semi-finals last year, scoring a crucial penalty in the quarter-final win over Barcelona. In his 17 years as a Roma player, that was the furthest he has ever progressed in the competition. Only Totti has made more appearances in all competitions for Roma than De Rossi, who would have to play nearly 200 more times to become Roma’s all-time most-appeared player overall. Roma captain Daniele De Rossi has been banned for two games following his red card against Genoa at the weekend.
Roma were 1-0 up when De Rossi slapped Genoa striker Gianluca Lapadula in the face, resulting in a penalty for the hosts. Lapadula duly converted to seal a point for Davide Ballardini’s side. De Rossi has apologised for his actions and will now miss games against Spal and Chievo. Following Italy's humiliating failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, Daniele De Rossi has retired from international football.
The Roma captain, 34, had been planning to retire at the end of the tournament, but with Sweden advancing ahead of Italy after the play offs, De Rossi has called time on his international career straight away. During his 13-year service for Italy's senior team, he was part of the legendary 2006 World Cup winning squad. He also won the UEFA Under 21 European Championship in 2004, before his senior international career. In total, he made 117 appearances for the Azzurri. Only Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro and Paolo Maldini managed more. With 21 goals he is also the highest-scoring midfielder for Italy since the Second World War. Now De Rossi will focus his energies on playing club football for Roma, where he has a two-year contract to fulfil. Hopefully he will now be able to play to the best of his abilities for his club side. Daniele De Rossi has signed a new two year contract with AS Roma.
The 33-year-old midfielder's deal was due to expire at the end of next month, and there were fears he may move to the MLS, or even another club in Serie A. However, the Italian international's future is now secure at Roma until 2019. He will, of course, be the club's new captain, following the conclusion of Francesco Totti's Roma career on Sunday. De Rossi made his debut for Roma in 2001, and is the club's second all-time leading appearance maker with 561 games for the Giallorossi. The fantastic news comes just two days after his fellow midfielder Kevin Strootman also extended his stay in the capital. Whether De Rossi will play as much over the next two years is unclear, but this season he was influential, showing his leadership abilities and experience on countless occasions. His renewal is certainly a good thing for Roma. |
