The Latest AS Roma News
Chelsea have completed the signing of Emerson Palmieri from Roma.
The left back moves to London for an initial fee of €20m, taking the number 33 shirt that he also wore for the Giallorossi. Emerson moved to Roma in the summer of 2015 and developed greatly in his time at the club. Under Rudi Garcia, he did not see much action, but Luciano Spalletti saw something he liked in him, and showed more faith in the youngster. The Brazilian-born player featured more regularly in the second half of his debut Roma season, and was rewarded with a goal against Milan near the end of the campaign. Following the departure of Lucas Digne, and the injury to new signing Mario Rui, Spalletti gave even more responsibility to Palmieri for the 2016/17 season, and the former Santos and Palermo player grasped his chance. By the end of the campaign, he had established himself as the club’s starting left back, and one of the league’s most sought after properties. However, on the final day of the season, he suffered an ACL injury, which meant he would miss pre-season under his new head coach, Eusebio Di Francesco. It also denied him an Italy debut, after he switched international allegiance. With Aleksandar Kolarov impressing in his first season for Roma, Emerson’s return to the pitch became a bit more complicated, and Monchi has now decided to cash in on the 23-year-old. The fact that Emerson was announced individually by Chelsea seems to almost certainly rule out the transfer of Edin Džeko to the same club this month. In terms of a replacement, Daley Blind looks the most likely to join Roma - a move which itself would cast Hector Moreno’s future in doubt due to the Dutchman’s versatility. Free agent Guilherme Siqueira, formerly of Atletico Madrid and Valencia, was also suggested earlier in the month. Whoever replaces Emerson will have a tough job on their hands, given the popularity of the new Chelsea player. Best of luck to Emerson for his new venture in England.
