The Latest AS Roma News
Antonio Conte has ruled himself out of the running to become Roma’s next permanent coach.
Former Italy boss Conte had been outlined as Roma’s top target to become the permanent successor to Eusebio Di Francesco, after Claudio Ranieri’s interim spell. Even though Conte would have a higher salary than Roma would usually pay, they were convinced that he was the right man to get them back on track. However, with Roma drawing with Genoa at the weekend, their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League took a serious blow - something which appears to have made up Conte’s mind. In an interview with Gazzetta Dello Sport, Conte has revealed that he will not be joining Roma this summer - but admitted it could happen in the future. “I fell in love with Rome during my two years as coach of the national team,” he said. “At the Olimpico you feel the passion of the people who live football with a particular intensity, who are crazy for Roma and live for Roma. A passionate environment that surrounds you. “Today the conditions are not there, but I think that one day sooner or later I will go to train Roma.” Roma may now decide to keep Ranieri on a permanent basis, while attentions could turn to Sampdoria manager Marco Giampaolo, who recently claimed he would quit the Ligurian club if he wasn’t backed in the transfer market.
