ON THIS DAY
2011 - Miralem Pjanic joined Roma from Lyon for €11m. He played 185 times for the club in five years before leaving for Juventus. Pjanic arrived at the age of 21, instantly making an impression on the team. The Bosnian midfielder made 31 appearances in his debut season, scoring three goals. Along with his 30 goals across his five-season stint, another major contribution he made to the club was convincing his compatriot Edin Dzeko to join Roma. He controversially left in 2016 after he paid some of his own release clause to facilitate a move to rivals Juventus. Also:

He won the Coppa Italia twice and the Supercoppa Italiana once with Roma, playing in the finals of all those tournaments. He moved to Liverpool in 2011, where he played just four times. He retired in 2013 after a brief stint with Botafogo. Also:

The Hungarian managed the club between 1940 and 1942, winning the Serie A title in 1941-42. 2017 – Roma signed Patrik Schick on an initial loan from Sampdoria. The permanent transfer fee would eventually become the club record. Schick's first season with the club didn't quite go as planned, as the beginning of his Roma career was disrupted by injury. It took him until December to score his first goal for the club, in the Coppa Italia defeat to Torino. Schick scored a further two times last season, netting against Chievo and SPAL in Serie A. This pre-season, he scored five goals, as he looks to make an improvement in his second campaign with La Magica. Also:

He led the club from 2005 to 2009, and from 2016 to 2017. Also:

Roma were 5-0 up after just 18 minutes and went on to qualify for the group stages after confirming a 10-4 aggregate victory. Stefano Guberti, Alessio Cerci, Jeremy Menez and John Arne Riise completed the scoring. Totti’s hat trick meant he had scored an incredible nine goals in August that year. The two clubs have had contrasting fortunes since. While Roma were reaching the Champions League semi finals last season, Kosice disbanded in July 2017, at which time they were in the Slovak second division. Also:

He has just entered his fifth season at the club. The centre-back rejected offers from several other clubs to join Roma, and has certainly justified the money spent on him. In his time at the club so far, he has made 172 appearances, scoring seven goals. The most famous of those goals, of course, was his winning header against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals last season. Roma have gone through a large number of centre-backs in recent years, but Manolas has remained a constant force at the back. Still only 27, he will be hoping to win his first trophy with Roma in the near future. Also:
2017 - Luciano Spalletti’s Inter beat Roma 3-1 on his return to Stadio Olimpico. Roma took the lead through Edin Dzeko but were defeated by a brace from Mauro Icardi and a late Matias Vecino goal. 2015 - Roma signed Lucas Digne on loan from PSG. Despite a reasonably successful season, they would not exercise their option to buy at the end of the campaign. 2012 - A late goal from Nicolas Lopez rescued a point for Roma in their opening day clash with Catania, securing a 2-2 draw after Dani Osvaldo had scored earlier. Roma reached the final that season, but lost to Torino on away goals. 1987 - Roma beat Triestina 2-0 in the Coppa Italia group stage. Lionello Manfredonia and Rudi Voller scored, the latter with his first goal for the club. 1984 - Despite going two goals up inside six minutes, Roma drew 2-2 with Padova in the Coppa Italia group stage. Gervinho came on from the bench to make his first appearance for the Lupi, the first of 88 games he played for the club. It was also Rudi Garcia's first competitive match in charge of the Giallorossi, and it certainly started brightly. After the win over Livorno, Garcia's Roma went on to win their next nine games straight. They went unbeaten until January, in a season in which they finished in second place. Also:

The attacker played for Roma between 1969 and 1972. 1941 - Angelo Domenghini was born. The striker represented Roma for one season – 1973-74 – scoring four goals for the club. 1913 - Ermes Borsetti was born. A midfielder, he made over 100 appearances for Roma across two spells between 1937 and 1939 and 1940 and 1945. 1907 - Andrea Gadaldi was born. The defender player for Roma between 1933 and 1940, sandwiched between spells with Brescia. 1991 – Roma missed out on winning the Supercoppa Italiana as Sampdoria beat them 1-0. Roma had qualified for the Supercoppa having won the 1990-91 Coppa Italia, but they couldn't overcome Scudetto winners Sampdoria, whose lineup featured Roberto Mancini (the goalscorer) and Gianluca Vialli. Future Roma player Marco Lanna also started for Samp, as did ex-Roma players Toninho Cerezo and Pietro Vierchowod. As for the Giallorossi, it was a star-studded lineup including Rudi Voller, Aldair and captain Giuseppe Giannini. It was the first time Roma had ever competed in the Supercoppa, which began in 1988. To date, La Magica have made six appearances in the competition, winning the trophy twice. Also:
2008 - Roma lost the Supercoppa Italiana to Inter after a penalty shootout. After drawing the first leg 1-1, Luciano Spalletti's side had a good opportunity to reach the group stages of the competition. However, a couple of immature challenges left Roma with an uphill struggle, and they were duly punished. Statistically, Roma dominated, having more shots, possession and corners than their opponents, but after Felipe had given the Portuguese side an early lead, Roma went down to nine men. Second half goals from Miguel Layun and Jesus Corona added insult to injury, condemning Roma to the Europa League for that season. Incidentally, Porto's lineup that day included Ivan Marcano, who joined Roma in the summer. Also:
